Okay... What is a self-sealing can? I'm looking for some R134 to top off my system. Amazon sells this. Decent price, these days. Link
The comments indicate that it uses a redesigned tap/adapter. My old adapter seals if you don't remove the adapter from the can. Do I need to replace my adapter? I don't see any real difference, looking at pictures, unless the threads are different, or something.

Yes the new cans have like a rubber top vs the piercing style of the old cans. You can get an adapter for your tap. I got mine at Walmart as well as the R134 for about $5 a can. [This message has been edited by jpeeler (edited 09-07-2020).]

Steve, I tried to top off my truck using the old do it yourself gauge that I had always used with the R134a. When I punctured and retracted it to allow the refrigerant to flow, the can sealed itself and I got nothing. Either your piercing valve is plugging it or it self'-seals. I held the trigger down as I opened and closed the valve and I never got flow.

Thanks everyone! I searched for a few minutes and found pics of the old vs the new. Think I've got it. (Obviously, I'm behind the 8 ball here, since this happened in 2017. Doh!)

I recently replaced my adapter with a new one. I don't know if it was different, but it didn't seal anymore. it seemed to not like the new types of seals and wouldn't let the reseal.
Why shop for freon on amazon? it's cheaper then that at my local walmart. I'm pretty sure all R134 is federally mandated to be the same formula. All of the extra freeze stuff sounds like a gimmick.
I've recently replaced the compressors(and other components) in 3 of our vehicles. It was $5-5.50 per 12oz can. I've done enough ac work to justify buying a 30lb can, but I haven't done it yet because the stuff stays so cheap for me. I'm in FL now, but SC was cheap too.
What are you doing that justifies 12 cans? Just curious.
