Cooling fan not turning (Page 1/1)

Hi Forum team,

I hope all is faring well in these times. Unfortunately, I I have been given word that neighbor hood thugs have been attempting to vandalize my 85 GT. It is parked 350 miles from my home in my hometown.

To my surprise, I threw in the battery and it started right up on the dime after sitting for a few years however the fan didn’t turn on as I got up in temperature. To my memory, will this fan turn on if the AC is on. I am in an emergency crisis to move to this car before these kids get to it.

As I was going to have it transported, I am thinking about taking the challenge and driving it 350 miles. Brakes and clutch pedal were firm!

Any response appreciated in regards to fan triggered by AC.

Thanks,
Jim

Yes, the cooling fan should come on any time the AC functions are activated. If the car has been sitting that long, I would certainly remove the HVAC fan and the ballast resister beside it and clean out any critter debris that more than likely is stored in there. After traveling that far to retrieve the car, it would be a big let down to get a few miles down the road and it suddenly erupts into flames.

You can test the cooling fan by disconnecting the motor terminal and applying 12V directly to it. You can also test the circuit by disconnecting the single wire from the fan switch and grounding its terminal with the ignition turned on. The switch is in the lower intake manifold, just to the right of the thermostat housing as viewed from the passenger side fender.

Yes pull AC blower and look inside.

Brake w/ firm pedal doesn't = Brakes are good.
Many brake things hate being parked a long time on most cars.
Fiero and others w/ same rear brakes have more problems and can cause Brake Failure or a Fire driven on highway when their bad.

I'll suggest a few things.

- Before heading on a long journey, take the car on a short drive and give the brakes a good test. Make sure there is no grabbing or pulling, and feel each rim for excess heat. If you've got a stuck calliper, it may not be evident while driving, but that thing will heat up quickly and could cause major damage if drive for a long distance.

- As for your fan, if your trip is all highway and there is no potential for traffic jams, you should be fine. The fan rarely even comes on in these cars unless they are standing still for extended periods.

- If its been sitting for two years you should definitely change the oil and ensure that the car is not leaking coolant anywhere. Check coolant levels and make sure you cary a few jugs of water just in case.
