Sudden engine shutdown (Page 1/1)
aewhitney JUL 20, 11:46 AM
After driving my 88 GT for awhile the engine just stops. Tach goes to 0 and I coast to a stop. Engine doesn't attempt to start. After waiting 30/45 min it starts right up. This has happened twice with out warning. It appears to be heat related but my temp gage is normal. No unusual symptoms. Just stops! Doesn't happen all the time. Any ideas for me to look at.
Thanks

If, when you crank it, the tach does not move, it is almost certainly your ignition module. Normal behaviour is to show a couple hundred RPM while cranking if good....no movement almost always is a bad module....after it cools, it typically works again....temporarily!

a fiero "suddenly mysteriously just stops". LOL. welcome to "Fieroland". (wouldn't be a Genuine fiero if it didn't do that.)

Buy a new AC Delco ignition module. Also while at it put in a new pickup coil.

I had nearly the same problem, car just died while driving but started again after sitting. Changing out ignition module and coil took care of it.

Yes... the old shut-off suddenly failing ignition coil and module. First time it happened to me I was on my way to prom with date back in the late 1900's.....

Thanks everyone. It has the second ignition module in it. Both have been from Auto Zone. I'll replace the pickup coil to see it that is the problem.
Thanks again

You may need a third Ignition module or a fourth to get a good one. Pickup coils will make an engine run awful, but they won't shut things down like a junk ICM will. Try to find a Delco ICM and pay the higher price.
