Every knock I have heard from a 2.8 Fiero V6 ended up being a rod bearing. If that is it, it is a complete overhaul.

Are we talking Pinging or banging? Pinging during accel' is a lean condition (Tuning) while a banging sound- on start up and continuing is the rebuild scenario....

I would say that if the knock is a rod bearing then the noise would be evident at idle or cruise. Get a 30" length of rubber hose. On one end tape a funnel to it. That is your ear piece. Now with the funnel to the ear, probe with the hose but stay away from the turning belts. When the hose goes over the source of the noise, you will hear it. Bearing knocks are typically loudest at the oil pan area.
