Dealing with Stale Gas BEFORE dropping the Tank (Please Review and Comment) (Page 1/2)

G'morning, All

Well I have a tank full (to unknown extent) of stale gas....to drop the tank I need to drive it onto my hydraulic lift ramps. So I need to start it, which means I need to get the bad gas out!

My plan (may) be excessive, but should (?) work:

1. Set up an external fuel pump with a new fuel filter inline.
2. Prime the external pump with a syphon pump
3. Pump out the stale gas into a 5 gal gas can for drop off at hazmat disposal. If not empty, continue with second gas can.
4. Put 5 gallons of fresh gas back into tank....add StarTron Enzyme Fuet Treatment...Pump gas in to family Murano for use (will be 5 of 20 gallons)
5. Put another 5 gallons of fresh gas and fuel treatment into tank and start car!
6. After driving most gas out, drop tank, replace fuel filter, install tube type Fuel Level Sender
7. Continue with next piece of Civilizing the Beast!

Whatcha think, All?

Too much, about right, or try something else?

Too much screwing around for me, I'd pump the old gas out with the pump by jumpering the relay, then start at step 5

Keep power to the battery, attach a hose to the fitting on the fuel rail (some R12 hoses work) , put other end in large gas can, then apply 12V power to pin G of the ALDL connector that goes directly to the fuel pump. The pump will come on and fill the gas can.

Hmmmm,

So, "Too Much!!" seems to be the general impression. Gotta think a bit about risk vs time, but my first thought is that you are right!

If you want to drain it some, disconnect the hoses, put a jack under the tank, remove the rear strap, then loosen the front strap while lowering the jack/tank tank. Fuel will come out the open vent and fill connections into a drop pan. Once you have a few gallons out, raise the rear, remove the front strap and pull the tank.

Or just remove it full (I have done this several times). Just slide the tank to the rear slightly and drop the front first. This will keep it from spilling out the back (unless you want to wrap a plastic bag over the tubes to seal them.
Gas is 5.5 lb/gallon.

pump ALDL G is easy for just "stale gas."

Gas w/ a lot of crap... Pull main fill hose and use a very flexible siphon into the fill port to drain.

Best if you lift the car a few feet to make siphon to work better.

Might have a hard time doing outside w/ a lot of air...
If You Must do this inside... make sure big door(s) are open, have wind blowing or big fan to keep fume levels "safe" and water heaters, Air compressors, etc are not on and pilot light is out.

Once you drain it, what do you plan to do with the gas?

I've resurrected two Fieros with at least six year old gas in their tanks. After doing the necessary mechanical repairs, I simply added enough fresh gas to fill the tanks, and drove!

Many people want to clean/fix a tank and need to empty one way or other.

Do Not dump old gas.
Just mix 1-3 old w/ new every time you fill next few times until gone.

Just don't tip the "can" to drain all the way so water and crap that sinks stays out.

I must drop the tank anyway to install a tube type sender, so getting it as close as empty as possible is pretty much a necessity.

Larry, that's a whole lot better than dumping it down the sewer ... but with the price of gas as high as it is (everywhere except for the States I guess), why waste it? Ogre's advice is sound.
