Hello,
I am looking into making an offer on a '88 Formula with manual trans. It is in pretty rough shape and currently not running. The owner said he drove it home a few months ago after he bought it and the fuel pump went out. He has a fuel pump but has not installed it. At this point the battery is probably shot. I have not heard it turn over. The owner said that other than the fuel pump it needs a wiper motor.
My question is what would be a reasonable offer?

Yes, Fieros aren't worth much and there are still bunches out there with low mileage that aren't running. Even running ones can be had for a bargain.

Thanks for the input. I'm looking for a project and I like the fact that it's a '88 with the V6 and 5 speed. But like you said $500-$600 is about all I can think to spend. Cheers!

I agree with Dennis. A car that's not running is a parts car. Dear ol Dad always said "Believe nothing that you hear, and only half of what you see"

Pictures would help. If the frame is rust free and the interior is not worn or warped too badly, I would argue it is worth a lot more than $500 (just my opinion). I would much rather take a car that needs a motor or doesn't run, than a car that is rusted or otherwise worn out.

I agree that a non-running car is basically a parts car. It could cost $10 to get it running or a few thousand. Plus you don't know the condition of anything, PS, trans, A/C, brakes, exhaust. I don't understand why anyone would try to sell a non-op car. Locally there are 2 cars that interest me. A 92 Corvette coupe, price before it quit, $7,300 and an 86 Z28, originally asking $3,500. Now both sellers say "I'll take less." Neither would like my "less" offer.

Bulk buys yield better prices, so take the following into account:
(3) 88 project cars were offered locally a few years ago on Craigslist for I think 1000 or so. One was close to running/driving (seems it would start with fuel prime or something) and one had no title. A group of 3 cars bought a couple of years ago included an '88 glass window chop project and an '87 3.4 DOHC car for $1100 total. Non-runners. The 87 GT 5 speed w/ 63K miles I bought a few years ago was $400 bought by itself. Had a dropped valve. An 85 notchie with 4.5 Cad engine sold for $600, running/driving with working A/C. Needed paint and a few odds, but could daily drive it. A complete '88 GT 5 speed rolling project with a mountain of new 3800SC swap parts/Corvette rotor brake upgrade, new rims/tires, etc sold for under 3K a year ago.
