Belt Question Please (Page 1/1)

Hi Guys, getting ready to replace the belts on my 86 GT, I saw two how to videos and they showed you have to remove the wheel and the wheel well panel to get to the side of the engine and belts. Is this the only way or is there another ? thanks

If your Fiero has the std GM 2.8L/3.1L /3.4L P/R engines or even 3800SC or 4.9L swaps , the belts can be replaced without taking out the wheel and wheel well liners.

Thanks Dennis, so it can be done from under the car ? But in no way from the top ?. The GT is new to me so I'm asking to get a head start, thanks for your help..

You may have to go under the car to reach the alternator and A/C compressor bolts but not remove the wheelhouse. Last time I did this on a 2.8L was at least 10 years ago but I recall reaching down from the top.

Since you have the car, you should probably have a look yourself!

You'll understand better than we can explain.

On my Fieros (notchies), I have always done the initial belt placement from above, bending over reaching in with my feet flat on the ground. I don't know how much harder it is to work on fastback Fieros with the flying buttresses. I'm sure it's doable, but slightly harder.

Belt tension on V6 Fieros is adjusted by using a wrench on the alternator ear to pull the belt tight. Then, using a separate wrench, tighten the alternator to its bracket. I do this step from underneath. Easy with a standard trans, might be a bit harder with the more bulky automatic in the way.

Thanks guys, yes the GT is difficult with the sails on the side , seems to me I'll get the car on a lift to do it from under, I guess the two guys who made the videos found a way to avoid that, But I would rather not remove the wheel well, sounds like more trouble than its worth..
