86 GT Trunk Weatherstrip Adhesive (Page 1/1)

I'm in the process of replacing my torn weatherstrip on my 86 GT. Does anyone have any suggestions on how much of the 3M black super weatherstrip adhesive I may need for the entire perimeter? I noticed they come in 1oz, 2oz and 5oz tubes.

Thank you in advance

Doesn't take much, don't put on a continuous bead of adhesive, just evenly spaced dots.

There was none applied at the factory and if you have a quality seal you shouldn't need any. The seal grip edge of the seal should grab on the the trunk flange snuggly. If your's is worn or loose, as mentioned above use adhesive sparingly. I would not use 3M on this type of seal I'd use small dots of silicone adhesive. Further, most everyone uses the 3M product incorrectly. Both surfaces should have a light coat of adhesive applied and allowed to dry to the touch, then one surface reapplied and pressed to the other surface to make a super strong bond. The GT trunk seal was designed to be removed when working on the engine thus preventing damage. If you use the 3M product correctly it would be very difficult to remove the seal.

Thank you for the replies.

I didn't realize the factory didn't use any epoxy, since the seal I have on now feels like it may have been glued down (though after 35 years with dirt and heat, it would seem that way).

Once I receive my new one I'll just clean the surface of the car and slip it in and see how it fits and seals.

After peeling my old weatherstrip off, to my surprise it was glued down. I'm assuming though it had to have been done by the previous owner.

I just installed the new one without it though (seemed to stay in place just fine without adhesive). The lid shuts a bit hard but I know it's a snug fit.
