The short filter (Delco PF47E) 3.1" high..... was changed to the long filter (Delco PF52E) 4.4" high..... around 1988.

The 4-cyl oil filter is larger, and it fits on the V6. That's what most people use.

I too use the PF52 (or PF52E) on my GT. The added length makes it easier to grab and unscrew.

The "E" designation means its an "Ecore" filter, which has more plastic inside of it than previously. These were introduced earlier in the 2000s.

My dad had an Impala and it was supposed to use the shorter PF47. Just like the Fiero, I found the PF52 fit perfectly and was easier to grab so I always used it on the occasional times I changed the oil on his car. Sometimes though he'd take it to the dealer, and they'd faithfully use the PF47! So I'd be bitching and moaning if I had to do the next oil change .... That short PF47 was tough to reach because the crossmember was right in the way! PF52 for the win.
