*** Moron alert...moron alert... *** How do you remove trunk light? (Page 1/2)

Really stupid question from a really stupid person.

How do you remove the trunk light to replace the bulb? I can't find the answer anywhere, and I can't seem to get it out.

What am I doing wrong?

If I remember correctly the OEM light has some tabs/clips on the back of the lens that hold the assembly in place. They need to be squeezed or gently pressed on one end to get the lens released. I would look at my cars, but all of them have a different bulb assembly to that I could use an on/off switch.

As mentioned, snaps on sides. Gently pop right (passenger) side out (towards rear of car) first, then slide to the right. I think.

I had not messed with this lite in 20 years- I got frustrated with it pointing in my face (Why didn't they position it by the latch so it wasn't shining in your face?)

Anyway, I checked in my "Do it yourself" booklet, and it shows to use a screwdriver on the right (Passenger-side) to pop it out; The whole fixture comes out so get the slot screwdriver in deep and carefully pry till it pops loose.

Many thanks!

I had heard that these are easy to break, and I can see why!

Thank you so much for the photos.

Do yourself a favor while you have it out, install a switch next to it, or you could just put a pin in the latch like most do to turn it off. While lid is open... But...If you take the car in for service, and don't tell them how to turn it off, the mechanic may not know how to do that if you forget to tell him. If the lid is open long enough, that halogen bulb can drain the battery. Just flip the switch yourself before you take it in...

Fieros can be tricky. For instance you must pry the trunk light assembly out from the right end exactly as shown. If you pry from the left you will break it. Sometimes the old brittle 30 yr old plastic chips even when removed correctly. If you do break it the Fiero Store sells new ones that look exactly the same but use thinner copper for the lamp holding tabs. I just reuse the old heavier copper tabs and put them on the new.
As for the topic being a moronic question; I do not believe that it is.

Did you try the search function? If you enter 'trunk light' there are several pages of info.
Unfortunately, the useful info in this thread won't likely be found by anyone, because the title isn't related to the content.
A title such as "How do you remove the trunk light?" would show up as a search result for a "trunk light" entry.
A search for "moron" also yields several pages of threads; only one of which addresses any trunk light issues.

Also there is an LED replacement available for that light. Won't drain the battery.

If you have an 86 or later Fiero, Rodney Dickman sells a trunk light lockout for when the deck lid will be open for an extended period. It inserts into the latch and holds the black switch open. The red tag is a reminder to remove it before closing.

When replacing the bulb, be sure to unplug the lens before installing the new bulb and make sure the harness doesn't fall back inside the trunk wall. The bulb gets very hot and very quickly when trying to hook it over the tabs.
