Hey all. My shifter cable was popping off of my ball socket constantly. I tied some zip ties and wire around it for a temporary fix, and purchased the Rodney Dickman "drill through" kit with the bushing to fix it. With the zip ties, shifting felt a little weird, but after installing the new kit, shifting from the 3rd/4th position in neutral towards the 1st/2nd/reverse position is near impossible. I'm talking two arms pulling with my body weight to get it into second gear. I havent even been able to put the car in first. My car is a 4 speed V6 1986. Do I need to adjust cables?

Disconnect cables from transmission. How does shifter feel? Can you shift transmission into gears by hand?

Sounds like the select cable is screwed up.

Ok, so I adjusted the cables within the brackets. It looks like the nee Rodney Dickman setup is actually longer with the new bolt sticking out. I've been able to get the car into all gears but reverse, and 1 and 2 have the bolt holding the shifter cable in place scraping against the aluminum bracket. I've dremeled the bracket slightly and ground down the bolt but it still is being pressed into the bracket.

Ok, I think I received the wrong repair kit from Rodney Dickman, from comparing kits i think I was sent the FWD getrag kit. The bolt sticks out too much and rubs against the aluminum bracket preventing me from shifting to gears properly.

Called Rodney and he says that it should be the same kit, nobody else has had problems. Maybe my setup is just not properly adjusted. Anyway after moving the bolts around and dremeling some aluminum out of a bracket, I can shift 1 through 4 just fine. Reverse is still a no go. The entire assembly if the drill through kit is simply too long and when the select lever pushes down it presses up against the bracket. Any ideas?
