Antenna fender mod (Page 1/3)
Chief08 MAY 01, 11:14 AM
Hey guys & girls,

I'm going to be moving the antenna under the fender before I paint the car. My question is, what is the best way to fill the resulting hole in the fender? I'm thinking of using the fiberglass bondo, so would I need to reinforce the hole from the underside somehow? Is there a better way?

Thanks in advance.

Don't use Bondo to fill that hole. You need flexible 3M urethane filler that's specifically used on facias.

Ok thanks, I'll check it out. Do I need some sort of mesh on the underside?

On a hole that size, I've had success with just roughing up the inside edges of the hole slightly w 320 grit sandpaper then cleaning it with alcohol. I just place a piece of duct tape on the inside of the fender, fill it and sand it smooth when dry. The stuff was called 3M™ EZ Sand Multi-Purpose Repair Material. its a 2 part filler All of the repairs that we made held. There are a number of other flexible bumper repair filers available.

Fiberglassing the underside will the best best for this. Would require you to take the fender off though to do it properly.

Do not use fiberglass. the fender is RIM, and has a different expansion rate. Fillers and adhesives will say on the label that they are good for RIM (reaction injection molded) plastics. Fiberglass is OK for body panels made out of SMC:

Thanks guys, we'll see how this 3M stuff works out.

Gall, I am positive you are correct but I believe with such a small piece that is being glassed in it will not be a problem. I did this with mine about 5 months ago and it has been in all forms of weather. Still strong as the day I did it. I have not finished the top side but the back side is glassed just fine. I would be willing to bet mine will be more durable than the 3M stuff. To each their own.

Arizona and New Mexico get a pass I suppose.....but up here in polar vortex country, body patches can come apart in one season.
