Parking Brake Lever Stuck (Page 1/1)

Hello all,

I am having an issue where the parking brake lever on my caliper is getting stuck on if I leave my parking brake on for an extended period of time. If i reach my hand behind the wheel and pull up on the lever, it quickly springs back into place. I believe it is not an issue with the cable but rather the lever or caliper. If anyone else has had this issue or would know of a fix I would love any additional information.

Thanks!!

That's usually a cable issue....but.....

When you set the brake, don't pull the handle quite so hard and see if that helps.

I will try not pulling as hard to see if i notice a change. I thought it was a cable issue as well, and it still may be, however when i go under the car and push the cable by hand it moves. The issue is only fixed when I pull on the actual lever on the caliper. I'm curious if there is any way to test whether it is a caliper problem or a cable problem

Additionally using it more often actually helps. In short, drive you Fiero more often!

Hopefully that is the case!! I just bought it a week ago and have driven it every day since. Unfortunately it has gotten worse since I bought the car, not better.

There is a coil spring that that cable goes through pushing the lever on the caliper, right?

Yes there is, and as soon as i reach down and pull on the lever, it springs quickly back into place.

You might want to squirt some lube on the shaft, it couldn't hurt.

Calipers or wheel cables might be "bad."

Handle and ratchet needs proper cable tension to work right. The Only Return Springs are the ones on the caliper arms. Spring in the level only affect the push button.

Examples:
Rear Pistons and PB screw etc in/on the caliper can have problem
Wheel cable jackets especially can "break" causing cable binding
Either or both can cause PB handle problems.

Hold wheel cable jackets near each end then pull the jacket away from end.
If jacket pulls out/off of end(s) then that cable is bad.

Do Not use any normal oil/grease to lube the handle parts!
They might work short term but attracts dirt etc and make more headaches.
Try Dry Teflon to spray metal parts only. (Many hate plastic parts because of solvents etc. to make Teflon spray.)
