4.9L Oil cooler line fitting size (Page 1/3)
Dennis LaGrua APR 21, 07:36 PM
Now that I've got the 4.9L running well, its time to consider replacing the oil cooler lines with something more substantial. The original oil cooler lines were made with metal tubing with rubber oil lines that were crimped on. They came with the engine from the salvage yard and they were cut short so I reused the metal tubing on the oil filter end with the fittings, cut the rubber lines off and put longer 3/8" trans oil tubing on the hose ends with clamps so that they could reach the oil cooler. . The rubber end goes to a 3/8" hose nipple on the cooler that I am using. Not sure that this will hold up long term but it might.
I'd ideally like to have a special HD hose up but need the thread size on the oil filer housing where the oil cooler fittings attach. It would be a male fitting that uses an O ring similar to whats used in a Fiero gasoline filter
The question of the day:
does anyone know the thread size on the 4.9L oil filter housing? My guess is 16mm x 1.5 O ring for #6AN hose
Info is appreciated

Thanks for the link but it comes up "forbidden". Still going with my guess of an AN6 fitting M16 x 1.5 O ring tube. SS Braided hose can take up to 500 psi or pressure so they are plenty strong.

I see Windows 10 is not allowing access to my web site. It is on an old old network. Well this will give me something to work on.

In all honesty does the 4.9 even need an oil cooler on a Fiero?

Sorry to be a bearer of bad news but just for reference my laptop with Windows 8 can't access that web address either. Hope that you can get it up and running again. For lack of other suggestions coming from the forum; at this point I am going with my guess that the fitting is M16 x 1.5 O ring. Same fitting used on the Fiero gasoline filter. There seem to be few 4.5L/4.9L swaps going on these days. I also assume that only a few are coming into the car hobby .

I have run mine for over 100,000 miles with no oil cooler.....

Hi,
I have a remote oil filter and oil cooler on my 4.9 engine. I removed the oil filter housing and made my own mount with AN- fittings. Not necessary, but makes oil changes and track days easier.
Cheers

Thanks all for all the great suggestions. Upon checking those oil cooler fittings on the oil filter housing they measure up more like M18 x 1.5 O ring to #6 AN fittings. I ordered adapter fittings today and hope that they work. I will use this cooler

and #6 AN SS braided hoses
JGunsett- Thanks for forwarding the webpage info but those parker fitting numbers don't come up anywhere?
Johns4.9 - You work always impresses me and it looks great but I often take the easier way out. I'll choose to leave the oil filter as is and when I change the filter will use olejoedads method of wrapping the filter and housing in a plastic bag to catch the oil dripping out when the filter is changed.
Oldjoedad and Spadesluck- I understand that the oil cooler may not be necessary, but I am an adventurous power tuner. With 9:1 compression and a GM requirement for premium gasoline in this engine I am striving to keep the engine as cool as possible.
