3800sc and 4 speed guys (Page 1/3)

Ok so honestly there are tons on here that have a 3800sc in their Fiero but how many of you guys actually are using the Muncie 4 speed with it. I have been trying for about a month now on finding a getrag or a f23 either not having any luck. I have a early 86 gt that has a Muncie 4 speed in it and a low miles 65k 3800sc that I got for 300 bucks with harness and ecm. I want to swap this motor in but like said want to go 5 speed. I want to know how actually driving the 3800sc would be. Would it be boosting the whole time on the highway? How would gas mileage be with it? Just overall driving experience. I daily my 2.8 4 speed now but i want some actual get up and go that can keep up with most 4 cylinders today and I feel the 3800sc would be best chose. I plan doing small mods to the 3800 from zzp performance nothing major like cam and head work just the small stuff well fill me in ladies and gents and thanks for all the help in advance

Many people actually prefer the 4 speed with the 3800. It is probably the strongest choice and with the extra torque, first gear runs out pretty quick on a 5 speed.

I thinking of a fun cruiser though, highway driving and around town with it. I would like to daily it but don’t want it to be screaming or boosting the whole time

Just swapped a 3800SC into my 84 Fiero that has a 4:10 4 speed. My plan is to daily drive it. I’ve only put about 5 miles on it so I can’t really tell you how daily driving it is yet. Seems good the small amount I’ve driven it.

According to FieroJoe, you would have the following:

M17 4 speed, 3.65 final drive.......2765 rpm at 70mph

Getrag 5 speed, 3.61 final drive..........2430 rpm at 70 mph

I would like to add, I have my cradle ready with the 3800SC Series 2 and the ‘85-‘86 Muncie M17 (ribbed case, not the smooth case). I have heard many good things about the 4 speeds (M17) handling the torque well, some even say they hold up better than 5 speeds (I take what I’ve heard to be true, maybe it’s an opinion, but they both seem to be very good options). I can’t say how it is driving and how it is on the highway (since my Fiero isn’t done, and hasn’t seen the road since I took it apart) but I have heard good things about both transaxles and in my opinion from what I have done research on, I went with the 4 speed. But I still would like to hear opinions from others and their experience as well.

If you are not going to be traveling interstates, the M17 four speed has much better gearing, and it handles the torque better than the Getrag.
The routing of the shifter cables can be problematic if using the stock 3800 crossover pipe.

I had the 4.10 Muncie in my car. Reving at roughly 3k on the highway. Terrible fuel economy. Fun to drive though

Now I modified my 3800SC which put out roughly 380 ft.lbs of tq on the dyno, and I split the transmission in half at the drag strip.

Other than that it was great. Just don't launch it hard and it should survive.

And in my opinion if you care about fuel economy, you shouldn't be swapping in a V6 supercharged engine

I had a 4 speed Muncie behind a 3800 SC for years and loved it. Routinely got 30 plus mpg on the highways. It was a bit loud but it didn't bother me. I'm in the process of swapping a Series II into another Fiero but with a getrag this time and I'm not sure I'm going to like it. What I do like tho is not having to F with the 4 speed cable position. If you have a 4 speed I would just stick with it.

Hmmmm that’s weird cause my tach must be way the hell off then cause at 70 I’m at 3500-4000 rpm. I will go with the 4 speed I travel 40-45 miles to work but I don’t really care cause it only cost 15-20 dollars to fill the tank of a Fiero so no complaining. Now main concern is what clutch would i use one from a 97-02 3800 f body would that handle a small super charger pulley slight bigger injectors, and ignition set up I don’t mine being in the 235-270 hp wheel power cause I know in the Fiero that will be insane anyway. Yes 300 would be nice but I got a 4.8 t56 gta for that kind of fun
