I've been working through stripping down my 1988 notchback. With only moderate difficulty I have pulled off the steering, the stabilizer, steering knuckles and springs. However, I'm having trouble with the upper control arms. On the drivers side, I was able to turn the pivot arm bolts, but the paddle nuts broke free and are turning. On the other side I couldn't move the bolts even with my long breaker bar. On that side I got mad and cut the bolt heads off, thinking I could then just drive the arm up and off, but I can't move it. At this point, I'm tempted to just cut the pivot arms, since I will be replacing them anyway, with the hope I can then get enough access to air chisel whats left loose.
Has anyone else had this kind of struggle and know of any tricks? I got into this thing because the frame, floors, etc are solid, but all the fasteners seem to rusted and seized. Much worse than anything I've worked on before. I think I'm on my 5th can of PB Blaster and my second propane tank.
