Need lower ball joint help! (Page 1/1)
creaky78 APR 12, 07:52 PM
I am in the process of replacing ball joints and tie rod ends on my '86 GT. No problems removing the spindles, inners and the uppers, need help with the lowers. The lowers have no snap rings, no groove for a snap ring nor any sign of tack welds. The rubber boots are attached to a metal sleeve that slips over the joint housing. When shopping for the joints I find none that look like this. Anyone know what I have here?

A picture would help... boot with metal sleeve ?
Could not find picture of that online.

Otherwise sounds like ordinary press-in front ball joint to me.
You can get MOOG K6273 ball joint from www.Rockauto

If you want to lower the front, get 1" lowering ball joints from Rodney.

Rent a Ball Joint Press Kit from an auto parts store.
You'll need it to press out the old and press in the new ones.

The metal sleeve holding the dust boot on the ball joint looks like this, it slips over the boot and slides over the ball joint body.

Never have seen one like this. The ball joints pressed right out, no welds or retaining ring present.

you have to use a ball joint spreader. looks like a really big tuning fork

I'm not having any trouble with disassembly, just was curious about the dust boot configuration and the origin of the ball joint. I'll be reassembling tomorrow.

Every ball joint I have bought for the last ten years has had differences compared to the worn out one. All makers are free to do their own thing as long as the part fits and works properly.
