Roll on painting (Page 1/2)

So what is the procedure of painting a car roll on style. I want a yellow fastback. I seriously hate that gm did the silver two tone look on the 85-87 cars 🤦‍♂️ Should of done just a solid color imo. Here is a picture of what I’m looking to do I’m going to keep my spoiler black and as well my aftermarket sails, mirrors and trim

You roll it then wetsand it smooth. Most people use a foam roller to avoid shedding. To get it to where you can wetsand to the point where you have a thick enough finish to not burn through usually takes 3 coats. So it is a bit of work.

This a polisher with a hook and loop style base. Note: it is a variable speed polisher set at second lowest speed. A fine synthetic steel wool pad will stick to it. After about a 400 grit wet sand, I used my polisher to bring up this finish:

This was painted with rattle cans but I think you could do the same with a roll job

If you are thinking about rolling on a Rustoleum job like others have done on here using mineral spirits, be aware that it will be the last paint job you ever put on the car. Once the mineral spirits absorb into the roof, hood, and decklid, you'll never be able to get the oils out and make a real paint job stick without fisheyes. You'll be replaing all 3 components if you ever decided to do a real paint job.

Are the mineral spirits already in the rustoleum? Or is this something users add to thin the paint? My paint job is stalled because I ran out of rattle cans. I was having a hard time getting the finish right. The third coat was crinkling on the roof so I wasted a ton of paint to get it to the point where I could get a decent finish. Using Rustoleum Universal brand rattle cans.

Rustoleum that comes in those quart sizes is an oil based paint. The spray paint version is a standard paint so you should be ok using those. Most people who do a roll-on paint job have to thin the paint before they roll it. They use mineral spirits which not only thins the paint but adds a TON of extra oil to the paint. Once that oil soaks into the FRP, it ruins it for any other type of paint adhesion.

Edit....see this thread. Notice the very 1st picture and the type of paint. That photo alone would have made me stop the project but he decided to continue.

Thanks that is good to know. I recently upgraded my compressor so I can use my hvlp gun but there is not much selection locally for automotive paint. For now I will just stick with the rattle cans, but I have taken the masking off the car so it will be a mutt for a while.

I know nothing about Canada and rules for true automotive paint so see if this can help you a little. It's very generic but with some buffing you get a nice finish.

As far as I know that is about it for selection around here. Mixed reviews, the negative seems to be it doesnt cover that well. When everything is back open Pt Huron MI is only a couple of hours away from here I should be able to get something down there.

I prepped the car with 320 grit sandpaper.
I thinned the rustoleum with mineral spirits until I could dip a spoon in the can and it would take 3 seconds until the pouring paint started dripping.
Before painting I would wipe down the car with 100% mineral spirits, followed b tack cloth.
1st coat - roll on, wait a day. wet sand w/400 grit - get 50% orange peel off. wipe down with mineral spirits and tack cloth
2nd coat - same
3rd coat - roll on, wait six hours. Roll on 4th coat and wait a day. Use 800 grit wet sand to get almost all the orange peel off. Follow up with Macguires Ultimate Compound.
I was happy with the results.
