Best method for replacing the clutch (Page 1/2)

we finally got all the electrical problems fixed with the fuel system got it running, so nice to be able to say. now it seems that it will need a clutch. whats the best way to go about it, do i have to take the cradle out or is it doable in the car?
I've never done a clutch on a car that wasn't rear wheel drive, while i know its rear wheel drive, its the same setup as a front wheel drive. so anyone care to share some knowledge?

I bought the engine support- Similar to what the Fiero store sells- and that holds the engine in place while allowing the cradle to be dropped and the trans to be removed. I used a piece of 3/4" plywood to make a trans support for my jack- even has a bolt to hold it on the jack (The wood- not the trans)...

You can make your own engine support that mounts on top of the strut towers and then has chains to hook on the two engine lift brackets......

Note; Just checked and Performance tool makes an adjustable support for$74 thru Summit (Plus shipping probably)

Clutch replacement is often done by removing the two rear cradle mounting bolts and allowing the back of the cradle to swing down. This has been discussed here in detail many many times, and all the threads are still accessible.

i searched for 86 clutch replacement in the archives here, and i haven't had a lot of luck. there are some links with broad stroke descriptions of the 3 ways to do it, but i was looking for something a little more descriptive than a 2 or 3 sentence description on each. am i using the wrong search terms or what. does anyone know of an in depth guide possibly with pictures or even video on here? i've tried to google it but no luck there either, get a lot of extemporaneous info there about a bunch of other cars but it had clutch in the post so it threw that at me too.

Search can be difficult here, but there is a lot of info if you can find it. When searching, open up the parameters and just take your time.

for this job there is very little difference in any Fiero. Any year....any engine has mostly the same steps.

WOW that is an awesome thread, thanks. One thing that's been bothering me, i cannot find anywhere that has a flywheel for the 4cyl. i looked at the fiero store and called all around at parts stores they only have the bolts not the flywheel just like the fiero store
anyone have a lead on that?

Ive never seen a NEW 4 cyl flywheel for sale.
Unless your current flywheel is in really bad shape, it can be turned just like a brake rotor and put back on the car.

i dont know what shape its in yet, havent taken it out. the new one wont be here till wednesday and i want to make sure i have the new one before i take it out. but if it is in bad shape what are my options, i cant find anywhere with a fly for that 2.5
