Getrag clutch disk stuck (Page 1/2)
vinny APR 06, 11:46 AM
Hi guys. I've read a bunch of threads but none have addressed my problem directly. My 88GT has been in storage for a couple of years. I crank it ever so often but don't drive it. I tried to move it not long ago and it wouldn't go in gear. I figure the disk is stuck to the pressure plate. Is there a easy way to check or fix this? It drove fine when it was put in storage so I don't think it is anything "broke". Give me some ideas please

IN GEAR with clutch pedal down.
What happens when you turn key to start it?

Have someone push the clutch pedal to the floor while you watch to see if the clutch arm moves. The rod that pushes on the arm should extend out about 1 1/4". If it moves very little or not at all you probably need a new slave cylinder.

Yeah it jumps. The disk is not coming off the plate. I'll get my wife to help tonight. Can a slave go bad just sitting??

Yes, for sure check to see that the clutch hydraulics are working before making any assumptions.

You can do this by yourself by standing beside the driver's side of the engine bay while pushing the clutch pedal with something long enough to reach.

Yes. Brake fluid is lube to moving parts and w/o moving the fluid film "dries out" and worse draws water too and get corrosion that can "weld" the piston in the bore.

Plus Disk can stick to flywheel and/or pressure plate from rust causing problems too.

Worse when parked outside or whatever w/o moisture control, Missing trans bell cover(s), etc. Because basically just a Slower version of disk brake rotor rust after rain but clutch is in full compression so disk sticks to one or both.

Other parts can go bad storing a car too. WP Seal is one example. Don't be surprise when that fails after running engine a few minutes to a few weeks after using again.

Yes, over the years water and rust forms in the lines and inside the slave corrodes and either leaks or allows air to get in. Either way the rod will eventually stop moving and the clutch will not disengage when you push the pedal down.

Ok I'm back. Yes the arm moves .75" to maybe 1". Stuck disk?

Not far enough. Bleed the system.
