Temperature gauge not reading. (Page 1/4)

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I have had no luck finding a fix. I have an 84 se and my temperature gauge doesnt work. The sensors are good. I tested them like other posts suggested. The gauge itself when the key is off reads past red as its resting position. When the engine is on, it just sits at 100. Sometimes I can get it to kind of work by having the key at run but the engine off. Can anyone point me in the direction to go? Also the previous owner had wired in an aftermarket gauge to another temp sensor but that caused problems so I had to remove it.

It's not a dumb question at all.....because there is a long complex history attached to this problem. General Motors messed up when they built the car, and It gets even more difficult when a previous owner has messed with the setup. The first thing you can do is understand how the car was built, and then read about how many cars have been modified through the years..perhaps yours was too.......so the problem and one solution is explained on this Archived web page.

Sadly even after trying what the page says, I can't get it to read any temps. I even tried a new sensor and gauge and it barely moves,

The sensor is grounded through the threads, so make sure they are clean. Does your TEMP light go on when you turn the key?

That it does. All dummy lights work like they should when I go to start the car.

On 84-87 Fieros, the gauges 'float' when off, and are influenced by magnetic fields. I assume you have one of those. You wouldn't happen to have big new speakers in the inst. panel?
luso31893 MAY 12, 06:21 PM
I dont. And this is the same that it did when I had no speakers in the dash for a while.

I am out of ideas.... Check the green wire from the sensor to the back of the cluster. Maybe it is loose or broken.

I dont think it is because if I ground out that wire it pegs the gauge but thank you for the assistance

oh... that's useful. New parts are not necessarily good parts. Did you see that sensor test procedure on the Web page?
