Getrag fluid level? Removed axles and fluid poured out, but dip stick showed low? (Page 1/1)

Had fluid leaking out of my axles seals so i bought new ones. I'm completely unsure of the level requirements, for some reason i figured the fluid level would be below the axle hole level, maybe i'm wrong? should the getrag fluid level be above the axle level? I'll be installing the new seals tomorrow but now i'm questioning how much more syncromesh i need to add.

After draining it takes 2qt of synchromesh oil/fluid to fill it. Cant remember if the Getrag has a dipstick attached to the fill cap.

Hope you drain any residual old fluid out before refilling with two new quarts. You're starting from scratch then, all should be good.

Couple things come to mind. You might put a small bit of Black RTV around the seal seats before installing the new seals. Wet the new seals with some synchromesh before installing the axles.

Cheers

The fluid level is indeed above the bottom of the axle hole. Worn output bearings will leak, and new axle seals will not fix it......grab the axles near the trans housing and push-pull. If you get more than about 1/16" movement, the bearings are bad.

Like mentioned above, the fluid level is above the axle holes. The fluid capacity is 1.9 quarts. You'll need to top it off after reinstalling the axles.

Since the axles are out, you can check the area where the seals seal against the axle. If there's a groove worn in the axle, it probably won't seal correctly.

I had a similar problem, used GM axle bearing stabilizer kits to fix it. I have several thousand miles on the kits and so far all is good. I found them on Ebay.
