Map Pocket (Page 1/1)

This might have been done before, but in case it hasn't.......I wanted to remove the door panel map pockets. After looking at the retaining nuts, I'm thinking crap, "special tool". So I made one. Took a 9/32 socket and used an angle grinder fitted with a cut off blade and ground flats on the outside of the socket until it fit the inside the nut. Worked great.

Aren't those the stamped steel nuts? If you had to do that, someone has installed them backward. The cupped side is supposed to go against the back side of the door panel. That way, a 10MM socket will fit over them.

They were indeed on upside down. I had to make the socket in order to get them off.

You couldn't use an open end wrench to reach behind and unscrew them? What you did was pretty ingenious, I think.

Unless it is ripped or that you are re-upholstering the door panel, why would you want to remove the map pocket? Removing it without replacing it or the panel leaves two exposed holes. If you want a new custom door panel take a look at Russ' offerings.

Will leave holes yes..........When I was building my 73 mach 1-5.0, I had picked up some good door panels but they were "Roll-up window" panels with a hole where the crank goes-My Stang had power windows......I actually installed the switches in the center console.......But what about those holes?

I went to the JY and found 1979-1982 Mustang hood emblem Bezels, and also some interior Mustang II running horse emblems....Used some clear resin to fill the bezel- with the horse in it- and a carriage bolt out the back...covered the hole and when I showed friends they thought they were factory!

Wish I had a pic of them.....

Some time ago I bought a good size pile of Fiero interior panels including practically pristine carpets and a pair of unmolested tan seats. I am using the best pieces to install in my '87 GT by mixing and matching. I removed the map pockets which were in great condition and installed them on the best door panels. Anyway, since my first post on this subject, I removed two more map pockets and lo and behold, the nuts on those were also "upside down" .
