Where do custom shaft makers want measurements from? (Page 1/1)

I have an axle out to do a seal, and while its out I might as well measure it.
Its a custom length on a V8 swap with Getrag 5 speed that isn't quite an archie swap, so nothing run of the mill in any way.
Since these axles work great, would I just compress it and measure it end to end? Other points?
Just preparing for the future.
Thanks for any info.

Most SBC swap actually don't need custom axles, so it would be best to verify what you actually have. The first measurement is to fully compress the axle and measure from end to end.

This is the stock fiero driver side axle:

Interesting. So both shafts are custom, they actually both have a visible sleeve on the outside. BUT...the short one is 22.5 inches.... so when the time comes, I could just use complete stock Fiero shafts?

Most likely. What I like to do is remove the rear springs, install everything, then turn the rotor/wheel by hand while cycling the suspension from full drop to full compression. If you feel any binding then determine if the axle is too short or too long (remove the inner boot, wipe the grease away and see where the rollers are in the cup).

Here is the Fiero passenger side axle (manual transmissions):

Thanks. These measurements are "compressed", right? I stood the short one on end to get 22.5".

Yes. The measurements are with the axle compressed.

Were all Fiero shafts created equal over the run of all Fieros or were some better than others?
Also would they fit the same on a Getrag equipped Fiero if they were from an Isuzu or Muncie, or even automatic equipped Fiero?
Thanks again.

All manual shafts are the same. All auto shafts are the same. The manual and auto shafts are completely different lengths, and the auto shafts are a little thinner.

Thanks! So any manual trans Fiero shafts, I'll have to keep a lookout so I have some back-ups.
