clutch overthrow (Page 1/2)

Is there such a thing? I have a new clutch but it seems to have a sweet spot a little more than 3/4 the way to the floor. if I press the pedal all the way to the floor I hear a spinning sound and the car wont shift? could it be that my RD master clutch rod is too long? should I start with adjusting that a little more? it was adjusted further out than normal when I first installed it with the old clutch and slave.

Only have the rod adjusted as long as it needs to be.

im thinking it might be too long still causing the clutch arm to over throw. ill adjust it a little more and see.

It's pretty doubtful that this rod would still be too long after it's been adjusted as short as it'll go.... unless you've got some weird non-stock setup.

Every RD master I have seen required the pushrod to be adjusted just a bit longer.
Both of these installations were non-stock applications, however. One was an SD4 with a Getrag. The other was a 3800 with a Getrag.

With that said, I understand that it is possible to "overthrow" a diaphragm pressure plate. The result will be that the pressure ring will go back toward the disk. (Most people don't have that problem with Fieros, so I've never seen it discussed, here.)
If there is a "sweet spot", I would think that's where the pushrod should be adjusted. Or you can buy a clutch stop, to prevent the pedal from being pushed all the way to the floor.

What is your setup? Stock? Swapped? (Sorry... I ought to know, but I don't.)

Sorry it’s stock getrag with 3.4 PR RD space and master and short shift kit

Over travelling the pressure plate fingers has happened, most commonly with F23 swaps, but can happen on any application.

It simply means the pressure plate fingers were pushed in too far and start making contact with the clutch disk center. Since all Fiero clutches are hydraulic and self-adjust, any issues with a mis-match of pressure plates, mis-match between clutch master and slave, or changes in pressure plate clamp ratios can cause the issue.

There are several ways to fix, but since you have an adjustable banjo, just make it shorter to allow the pedal to bottom out before the over extension happens. If this isn't enough, then you can also space the clutch master from the firewall to lower the pedal even further.

Thanks for all the feedback. I’ll try adjusting the master banjo to start. I think this might be the issue as it was previously extended fairly far as my original clutch was wearing out and my original slave wasn’t pushing the clutch arm far enough. I have a spec 1 clutch installed now.

I had an over throw problem with my 3800 swap - I had a 4 cyl slave on the getrag. I just put a stop on the clutch pedal and all was fine
