1988 Formula V-6
It's happened twice now, driving to work everything seems fine, loud backfire then nothing. Engine turns over but won't crank. First time it fired up after sitting about 20 minutes, got it home, changed coil and ignition control module.
That was a little over a week ago
After that it seemed fine until today, same thing, driving about 55 mph, back fire, nothing. Couldn't get it to restart this time.
Any ideas.
Thanks
Mike

Your replacement ignition control module is junk. Happens a lot. It could be the ICM, but it also could be bad secondary ignition components killing the ICM. [This message has been edited by Gall757 (edited 02-27-2020).]

When you replaced the ICM, did you use proper heat sink compound between it and the base of the distributor?
It's also a good idea to replace the pickup coil (which is cheap) when replacing the ICM.

Yes, used the heat sink compound and cleaned the surface before applying it. Right now too much other stuff going on s so it will sit for the next week or so.

I was left with a similar situation which left me with a 20 mile tow two years ago...
Check your distributor cap and rotor. My distributor cap puked it's coil connector spring. Car stumbled a few times, then quit. I grabbed spare ICM and still nothing. The car sat for almost two months while I pulled out my hair. Found it on a whim.
