85 ecm and 86-88 ecm v6 (Page 1/2)

Question. Is the 85 ecm 6869 and the 86-88 ecm 7170 basically the same with the exception of the 85 ecm having the capability of running a knock sensor? I want to know if I can swap a chip from one unit to the other

I've swapped whole ECM's and loaned out 85, 86 and 87 ECM's to be used in different year cars and there were no issues, so probably interchangeable. That doesn't apply to the Duke ECM's, though.

Not asking if the ecm is interchangeable want to know if the chip programming is? So if I have a bin file for a 7170 will it work on a 6869? I’m thinking it will buy looking for confirmation

Those ECM's had the stock chips in them, so whatever they are, they worked.

No, you cannot just switch the 'chips'.

I’m not just switching chips. I have a bin file from another member for my 3.4 with a supercharger. He had this file on a chip for a 7170. I want to use the 6869 from an 85 and put the custom chip on that so I can add the knock sensor. I’m not swapping factory chips. Are both ecms aldl format? If so then I should be good

Sorry, dont know...

6869 ECM doesn't have knock input so won't work.
The whole ECMs are different and can't move PROM between them. May seem to boot but could damage ECM etc. just booting the computer.

But isn’t 6869 the 85 ecm? I thought it had knock sensor capability ? What am I missing here?

And to clarify again I have the bin file not a physically burnt chip.
