88 rear brake problem (Page 1/2)
Lilchief JAN 28, 03:10 PM
Just got my rebuilt 88 rear callipers in. I was wanting to paint them first. But after trying to disassemble them I noticed the piston was coming out. Is this normal ? And how does it go back in ? I also noticed that the bleeder had been welded closed and a new one drilled opposite it. That was way off center. Any suggestions ? Also I noticed that the boot on the piston had a groove above it. Don't know if that's right or not. I'm almost read to just send it back.

Real brake rebuild businesses have better ways to fix a bad bleeder so that alone is trouble.
Move a bleeder isn't good because can be hard to impossible to remove air in the caliper.
Rear pistons can get push out by the spring but not easy. Maybe is wrong piston. Other years/models work same but a little or a lot different total diameter matters.

Better off to return then risk of worse problems.

I suspect that the caliper was switched from one side to the other...By switching the bleeder valve to the other side of the caliper. Pics would help- but it really sounds like either way there may be serious quality issues....

Here's some pictures I took. You can see where the bleeder is off center and the other has been welded up. I did manage to get the piston pushed back in. Pushing the piston and turning the ebrake bolt a little bit at a time. Glad I have''t painted it yet.

Several folks here recommended them: calipersonline. I just pulled 88 rear calipers out of the box to see what was sent to me. There's an outer box holding two individual boxes inside. Each caliper is wrapped in a rust-preventative paper then sealed into a plastic bag. This is as far as I looked about 2 wks ago when they arrived --- they looked clean, all new parts, and looked like a quality job.

Here is a picture after fully unpacking. A foam block was holding the two brake pads in place. Not shown are the bleeders which look fine.

You should call them up or email to let them know you don't want the welded calipers. If you don't mind waiting you can always send YOUR calipers and they will rebuild them instead.

I called and informed them of the issues. They said to send some pictures and tell him which side it was on. He said they would send me another one. Glad to know there's still good people out there.
