I have a 87 GT...bought it in 1992 in Savanah GA., when i was in the military...stopped driving it in 1999 and it has sat since, covered and uncovered...bout to turn my attention back to it and I want a V8 sound...looked at GM 283 but I'm going to go with the Ford 289...do you think this be a hard swap crossing engine brands. Wonderful engine.......but I would save it for a Mustang or Sunbeam Tiger.....something pre-computer.

the engine can be updated to fuel injection in which i would do...i like the compact size of it and all of the new technology out there for the engine...my neighbor had one in a mustang and it was a little feisty sucker...

So would you then use a Ford transmission and computer? I don't think there is much on this forum for support, but it would make a great build thread.

Gall757 Wouldn't have to use Ford computer....the manufacturer of the FI has it's own computer software...

If you use a Fiero transmission, an adapter plate will be needed....If you use a Ford transmission you need to design cable shifter connections and manage either through your new software, and then there is the motor mount issue, so lots of things to consider, and I think you would be the first.....so if you have the talent and tools, go for it....we will all want to watch your progress.[This message has been edited by Gall757 (edited 01-18-2020).]

In addition to all the regular challenges with an engine swap and transmission swap. You will have to custom design a flywheel, clutch setup and adapter plate to make the 289 and the F40. It definitely is doable, but no off-the-shelf parts exist to do it.
There was a guy way back when (2feido) that had a ford 302 in a fiero. He did his own adapter plate and is wasn't accurate enough and kept wiping out the hubs on his clutch disk.
Hope you are a machinist, have machinist friends, or deeper than average pockets.

Yup.
This is where "I can get a V8 boat motor from my sister's boyfriend's cousin for FREE. How much work to swap into the Fiero?" becomes VERY expensive. LOL
