86 SE ran great and then suddenly died. (Page 1/1)

Great. Another no start post.

I just got done replacing the fuel filter which was causing the car to not start, turned the key and it started right up and sounded great! Got it up to temp and revved it to about 4000 and it still sounded perfect. I put the headlights up bc I get a kick out of pop up headlights, and when I put them down... the car just died. No sputtering, no nothing. Running one second, gone another.

I took a look at the fuel filter again, not leaking and its not clogged. I hear the fuel pump prime when the key is ON, and after cranking I can smell gas out of the tailpipe. So probably not a fuel problem. I then notice when I crank, the tach doesnt move past zero. Which means no spark. I do some research and find it could be the ICM, so I take it out, get it tested 3 times aaannnd it passes. I put it back in with some high temp grease and it still doesnt start and the tach doesnt move.

I replaced the ignition coil roughly 2 weeks ago and have driven the car a solid 4 miles total so I doubt that went bad already... the pickup coil looks kinda gross but it isnt in pieces and its still magnetic. I really don't want to pull my distributor. Do you guys have any ideas at all?

Fixed a friend's car with exact symptoms.
Would run for about 10 minutes, then "shut off".

Don't guess. Test the pickup coil.
Testing can be done without pulling distributor.

Pardon my complete ignorance, do I do these tests with the key on? And ohms can be done with a digital multimeter I hope because that's all I got.

Key off.
Yes the DVM will check resistance (ohms).
Just because the ICM tested good, doesn't mean that it is. Replace it.
