stalls when I shift into park (Page 1/1)
mcur JAN 08, 03:08 PM
Having an odd problem, didn't find much useful in search.

First off its an 88 2.8l V-6 automatic.

Car seems to run fine, getting around 22 miles per gallon, however when it's warm it will shut off when I shift to park or neutral. It shuts off like the key was turned off, no sputtering etc.

Idles fine while in drive.

It starts easily when cold, but warm starts take a little while, which seems strange since the cold start injector is blocked ( took my mileage from 18 to 22.)

Recent replaced plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and checked timing.

Thanks

Maybe NSS Adjustment maybe off or shifter or shift cable have problems.
Cable and shifter wears etc and shifter doesn't match position of the trans shift arm. Most shifter spots doesn't matter much but Park missmatch will have problems.

Check adjust for switch on trans...
See my Cave, Neutral Safety Switch

Then Need ECM scan tool and look NSS line says in gear or not.
ECM gets a signal from same and adjust idle etc.
Dirty/bad switch can = bad ECM signal.

Other wires on same may have problems and not affect others.
Example: Big wires on the switch are starter interlock but starts so they are ok.

Isn't TCC locking feature.
Problems for that causes stalling when stopped in gear. Often when drive on highway then stop at T-light or sign at end of ramp etc.
Can unplug it just for a test. is on trans front. Make sure unplug plug can't melt by exhaust.

The NSS switch adjustment will keep the car from starting, but will not kill the engine once it is running.
The Fiero NSS provides a path for the solenoid START voltage and back up lights.

Check and reset the IAC.
