Cold idle not working (Page 1/1)

My 86 GT cold idle has never worked.
When it’s dead cold and you first start it, it idles around 850-950 rpms and stays there. It never goes in to a fast idle like my 85 GT. Strangely, it warms up fine at this rpm. My 85 GT behaves completely the opposite! In fact, it will go immediately to about 1400 rpm and it will take a good 2.5 -3:00 minutes to go back down to about 1050 rpm.

What is causing my 86 GT to not go in to a fast idle when cold? Cold start injector plugged? Electrical issue? Throttle body issue? Lastly, my 86 is an auto. Thanks, Kit

Are the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) and Manifold Air Temperature (MAT) sensor reporting the correct temperatures to the ECU? Is the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve functional? Is the IAC air passage clear?

85 and 86 use different ECUs, perhaps it is a difference in programming between the two.
If it isnt affecting warm up, I wouldnt worry about it.....

And how cold does it get in San Jose anyway?

I wanted to chime in here.....I am having the same situation with my 85- It has no cold idle- this may have started with me swapping in an 88 computer- But I don't remember having this problem a year ago when I swapped the computer.......( It has had a 3.4 F-body long block for 20 years....)

I may try to swap the computer back......By the way, which sensor actually tells the 'puter that the engine is "Cold"..?

The Coolant Temp Sensor, (CTS).
