Before I take my cars in to the smog station, I always run a full can of Seafoam through the intake while the engine is running. Since my 86 GT was due, I ran a can through it as well and then drove to the smog shop and it passed just fine. However, I noticed the check engine light would come periodically and then go out. Fortunately it stayed off for the smog check but as I got back home the light went back on. The car seems to run just fine and the only thing out of the ordinary is an occasional slight miss in the exhaust note but that’s it.
Have you ever experienced Seafoam or other cleaners/additives turning on your check engine light? To be fair, A) I did run a full can through the intake and B) I haven’t driven it very far since the treatment. (Smog shop is only 3-4 miles from home)
Your thoughts? Thanks, Kit

Seafoam and others are crap. More so engines w/ Cat(s) and O2 sensor(s). You burn oils and whatever else in that + whatever else release by it then goes down exhaust that can plug or poison either or very likely both.
Even if MIL is off, check codes stored in ECM and post that data. old ECMs can turn off MIL but will save codes most times.------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. (Jurassic Park)

I personally have not had any ill effects while using Seafoam in the intake, oil, or the gas. I have not used it on my Fiero yet because I rebuilt the motor just last summer. However, I have used it on other vehicles while doing normal maintenance and have not had anything go wrong. [This message has been edited by Spadesluck (edited 12-26-2019).]

Seafoam is good for stabilizing fuel and light cleaning, I've never had it harm anything on anything.
