Passinger Healamp Moto Issue (Page 1/1)

My 13,000 mile Indy had a problem with the battery going down when parked for 3 weeks or more. It was totally dead again, and there were no lights or anything on. I was concerned about a flakey internal cell.

When batteries go completely dead, just hooking them up to a charger on low does not always work. The best way to do this is to hook up another, fully charged battery and allow the batteries to equalize, usually for a full day. Then, charge to discharged battery on a charger on 2 amps or less for another day.

I installed the battery in the car, checked using a multi-meter to insure that the trunk light was not staying on, and it was not.

I started the car, topped up the gas with Stabil, and took the car back to the storage unit.

I checked everything, and when I turned the headlights on, both came up fine, but there were a few clicks on the passenger side light. I turned the lights on and off, and the clicking got worse. Finally, on about the 4th time, the passenger head light came up, and the motor continued to click and run.

Obviously, my gear is shot…time for Rodney’s new aluminum gear. I did more research, but nothing I found had the motor continuing to run. I removed the headlight assembly, and put the car away. I think the motor was “clicking” when parked, and this was causing the batter to discharge over a month. I’ll check it in a month, and if it is still charged…we have a winner.

My question is, will a new gear most likely fix the problem? Other things to check? Other parts I should buy?

The gear will not fix the problem; The internal Limit switches that shut off the motor at the end of travel are not working properly...I rebuilt both of mine with RD's gears (Very good product) and they went up and down smoothly, but one did not shut off properly.......was 120* when I touched it...By the time I disconnected it 20 minutes later it was 160*. The other one started running on all by itself the next day (Now I know why my battery was run down overnight twice in the preceding year)...I went ahead and switched mine over to the 87-88 system- and also installed a relay on the main (Red) power wire which is direct wired to 12 volts. The motors will now only work when the key is ON.

Look for "Fiero headlight power relay mod" back on 12/01 in Technical....That mod will stop your battery from going dead and also your motors from catching fire (Has happened a few times- There is a video out there of one "Pontiac Fiero on Fire")

If the motor continued to run, a new gear will solve that problem. Often, replacing the gear stops the ticking, too. Not necessarily due to the new gear, but due to the new bump stops that are installed at the same time.

If you rebuild, be sure that the rubber D seal at the top is set into it's cavity IN THE TOP OF THE CASE and not ON TOP OF THE CASE.
