Differences between 1988 exhaust y-pipe and pre-88 y-pipe? (Page 1/1) |

My exhaust on my 88 with 3.4 swap has been getting progressively louder and it has finally been confirmed that my y-pipe is halfway cracked through one of the feeder pipes. The Fiero Store only sells 85-87 y-pipes. So, what are the differences?

They are not interchangeable.
The 88 crossover is longer after the two banks blend (the down pipe is longer). The heat shielding is different, and the EGR is slightly repositioned.

I would tear the crossover pipe off and remove the restriction at the blend, and repair the existing pipe. Pull the exhaust manifolds and port them while you are at it.

The exhaust manifolds are ported, and I might try to remove y-pipe restrictions and get it repaired at a later date, but I'd really like to get the car back on the road asap. Do you know if the foil y-pipe heat shield was specific to the 88 model?

It was. '85-'87 used metal heat shields.
