Guys, time had come yet again to do something about the Fiero parking brake.
Has ANYONE figured out a replacement for this terrible design? I want an effective parking brake that won’t rust or seize up on me in a couple of years. Something custom.
Has anyone made a custom setup that works more like modern car parking brakes???
Thanks

I too would like a no BS parking brake. Anyone tried a line lock on the rear brake line??

I looked into a line lock? Or a hydraulic hand brake? But both would bleed down over time and wouldn’t hold.
We need a better designed cable system...I just don’t know how to accomplish that. Or if someone has figured it out yet via a brake upgrade kit.

I hear you Ogre, it’s just I’ve had different professional shops attempt to fix this issue using brand new parts and still the ebrake seizes and gets stuck.
I also must add I drive my car in the winter, so snow, salt and sand don’t help the cables or Callipers.
I tried regularly spraying the cables with weasel piss and anti seize spray one time. And again...issues with the parking brake getting stuck and not disengaging.
The design is so poor...I know it’s not a fair comparison but my wife’s Honda Civic? Not one single ebrake issue, never gets stuck....in my mind there HAS to be a way to change or redesign this system so we can have a reliable parking brake like more modern cars.

The only “solution” I see (maybe) is to spend the money on changing the brake callipers, and then use a dedicated parking brake spot calliper separately, like in a lot of WCF’s designs, (eg their Brembo system)

Go to Will's thread in the constuction zone and he is very close to having a working rear brake setup using disc's with built in drums for the parking brake. I do not know if he is going to offer them for sale or not. Honda rear brakes have discs with built in drums and they are the most reliable design. Mazda uses a modern version of the Fiero style no drum caliper and they work very well, but wether they have a 5X100 bolt pattern on any of their cars I do not know. Some Subarus use 5X100 bolt patterns, some of their front brakes will fit cut down Fiero hubs but I have never looked in to the rears on a Subaru. ------------------ 86 GT built 2.2 ecotec turbo rear SLA suspension QA1 coilovers on tube arms

Where is this thread? i cant seem to find it.
Since WCF made a brake kit using brembo's out of a 2000 Porsche 911 (yes i know they use a spot caliper), can we not just order Calipers from Brembo directly and hook up a custom cable system to the rear discs to engage the parking brake like normal cars? (sorry im not 100% on how modern parking brakes work) Im not understanding the actual mechanics of why this mod is so freaking hard.
Could we not buy calipers...make custom brackets to mount them...and hook up a cable system to the rear discs?? What am i missing?

If you use the parking brake every time you park the car, you will have very few problems with the design. If you dont use it, you lose it! No fix necessary....

Unfortunately this is just not true, i used the parking brake ALL the time, (i prefer to use it over leaving a car in gear) ...as i mentioned previously in my post, i had the parking brake replaced, maintained and repaired multiple times with new components...from cables to calipers...and eventually within a year the thing would start to stick, drag, and seize....it got to the point where everyday no matter what i did, i would have to battle with the Parking brake every morning to get it to release properly...until it just wouldnt anymore and i had to manually force the caliper to let go and stop using the parking brake all together.
This brake design absolutely needs a fix
