Temp gauge pegs out (Page 1/1)

On my 88 GT the Temp Gauge pegs out one the car is started. The PO showed me how to tap the gauge with your hand, and it will drop to a normal reading. Is the gauge broken, or the sending unit bad? I have only driven the car 15 miles and did not experience any overheating problems.

That's the way GM had it wired. Somebody dropped the ball. There is a way to fix it, though.

Fierosails.com used to have all kinds of info, but due to Paul McKribben's health he stepped away from the business. However, archive.org does have several copies, such as this.

Thanks for getting me the info on the temp gauge fix. I would have wasted a lot of time on this problem and never achieved success.

Note to Cliff....
As this is one of the most frequently asked questions, it would be great if it was on the FAQ forum along with a saved copy of McKibben's FIX.

And I did the wire switch on my 86 SE. It worked as it should. After I did the 3800sc swap it's pegging the temp gauge again. I swapped the 2 wires behind the gauge pod and that did not help. Before going further I'm all ears for an answer. Pardon the semi-hijacking.
