Lights Brighten and Dim as I accelerate/Decelerate (Page 1/1)

Okay guys. I need your help on this one.
My 85 5-speed has a V8 Archie 350 swap. Everything is new..and I MEAN EVERYTHING.
In neutral.... as I apply the pedal, the gauges and headlights increase in brightness. As I release the pedal to idle, the lights dim. Same thing happens when i'm driving.
I took it to a electrical auto shop and they swapped out the alternator to the best that is available. Problem still occurs.
They also said that the crank shaft pulley is to small and needs to be a larger diameter so that it can spin the alternator faster, which supposedly will fix the problem.
Is that correct????? Since I have a SBC swap, I noticed I am limited on the pulley diameter? Or am I looking down the wrong path?
I need your expert advice.

They tested electrical system and said wiring and battery is all good?

Do you still have original SI style alternator?
They weren't the best at producing current at idle.
You could see about a smaller pulley for the alternator.

Or upgrade to a better CS130 alternator.

Yes....
They tested the electrical system and wiring.....all was good - according to them.
I have the smaller pulley(the smallest you can get) on the alternator.
any other suggestions. Other things i should check for? Or is their recommendation of larger crankshaft pulley correct?

Upgrade to CS130 alternator

If someone installed a "Power Pulley" then very possible the shop is right.
But note that installing OE crank pulley w/ undersized alt pulley can overdrive the alt and wreck it.

Before you guess more and wast time... get a cheap optical tach, follow direction, and read real Alt RPM at idle etc.
Why? See my Cave, Watt Story

Upgrade to CS130 may help but they often don't like wrong pulley(s) too.

Iffy ground(s), battery cables and more can to same thing as a "slow" alt. Sorry but likely can't trust the shop.
Isn't just reading Volt @ different points. While May help but often doesn't.
You need a meter w/ DC Amp Clamp to check current draw for different sections for a car w/o cutting/disconnecting them. Most you find used are AC amp clamp only and won't work. (Note: Mangets, Relays, Motors can cause errors so try to keep them far away as possible to the clamp to read amps.)
But before you try that... Clean/fix all grounds and + dist box under C500 and coat w/ brake or silicone grease.
All engine bay grounds then follow the list in my Cave, Wire Service

Get new ACDelco battery cables. Others w/ lead battery terminals often have problems on side term batteries.
Use short wrenches to prevent over torquing the battery ends.
