Tire Size and Type for a 1988 Fiero GT (Page 1/1)

I have a stock 1988 Fiero GT. Will 225/60/15 fit all the way around?

What kind of performance tires are available for stock wheels? I can only find touring tires except for Nitto NT860 225/60/15 (I think these are made for Australian market.

They will fit, but you will probably not like driving the car.

What you have found is the way things are. There may be a few expensive racing tires around, but no reasonable 15" performance tires.

Why would I not like how it handles/drives?

Wide tires on the front can be a nuisance on a daily-driver with non-power steering, especially when it comes to turning while parking etc. Wide front tires also have more of a tendency to follow the "crown" of the road. You might be happier with 205 or 215 tires on the front instead of 225.

Keep in mind, if you're using the factory '88 GT rims, you wouldn't be able to rotate your wheels to even out tire wear anyway... if that's your reason for wanting the same size tires on all four corners.

When I was autocrossing my '88 Formula, I had 225/50/16 on all four corners, and I liked them on the track. However, driving the same car on the street, I much preferred 205/55/16 tires on the front with 225/50/16 on the back.

In addition, I think you will find that fat 225 tires on narrow (6") wheels will roll side to side when cornering....increasing instability. The stock width was 205, with many people using 215 width on the stock wheels with no problems, but I think 225 may be too much.

There are some body differences but my 1988 Mera was based on a GT platform and the stock wheels were used for the base model. Optional Chromadoras (7" rims IIRC) were also available for thje 88s. Both wheel types used the same size of tires (245 x 50 x 15 in front and 265 x 50 x 15 in the rear). Yes it does take some effort to turn the car at low speeds (< 5 mph) but it is still managible.
