Oldsmobile Cutlass Donor Car for LQ1/4T60? (Page 1/1)

So we just welcomed an 88 GT that needs a new motor. We also have an F40 that needs a home.

Looking at doing a three way swap to get my Formula (manual) a high performance engine and my GT (auto) some better freeway manners.

I've got a line on a mid nineties Cutlass with the LQ1/4T60 combo. Thinking I could drop my good L44 and the 4T60 into the GT and get the LQ1 into my Formula with the Muncie 282 (for now) and then get a 3800SC stroker or LS4 done up with the F40.

Anything unusual about this donor car?

You will probably want to take, the engine, transmission , ECM, the engine, transmission mounts, & wiring harness . The LQ1 is, I believe a direct bolt in but with one new axle for the 4T60 (or e?) Then you must connect fuel, cooling lines and add a fuel pump. The engine is rated at 215HP but from what I have read they have been de-tuned in the PCM and can be re-programmed for more HP. The 3.4 DOHC engine is a high revving design but it is heavy (500lbs loaded) and its reliability has received some criticism. The biggest issue for many owners is that they did not change the timing belt at the recommended 60K miles and trashed the engine. There were some other issues that you can read them here.
3.4 DOHC Discussion thread
IMO if you want high a high winding engine with decent power, if the price is right, you may like the 3.4 DOHC .
