Fiero wires are the old vinyl type insulation (PVC). It can shrink and crack and if it gets hot it melts. I would not use any petroleum based solvents....maybe DAWN is OK...but that's about as strong as you should use.

Here’s what I’ve done successfully on LOTS of connections. Supplies: cotton pipe cleaners, denatured alcohol, Tarnex, DeOxit. Soak the pipe cleaner with tarnex and clean the connector, rinse with alcohol. If possible blow dry with air compressor. When dry, douse with Deoxit. Keep in mind Tarnex is very conductive so a good rinsing is mandatory.

To clean the wiring harness itself - Simple Green works well. Spray it on and let soak, then rinse with water (Mean Green if really nasty).
I use these products all the time on wiring harness from cars to pinball/arcades machines (I restore those) without issues. Usually Simple Green works well - sometimes a soft brush to run along the wires may be needed to help loosen the crud, but 99% of the time I just soak the harness in a pail of Simple Green and warm water.[This message has been edited by Mickey_Moose (edited 09-10-2019).]
