I am in the process of swapping my 85 to the later model headlight system...I have the harness, the module and the LH motor. My question; Is the linkage the same between the two systems, or do I need to track down an 87-88 and get the levers/linkage off of it?

Not a definitive answer, but i believe the frame and linkages are the same, they only changed the motor design and electrical control.

The linkages and buckets are the same. The only difference is in the headlight motor mounting bolts. They are a bit shorter on the 87 and 88 models. You can use the bolts from the earlier models but you will need to use a Dremel tool to cut off the interfering bit if you change the motors to 87 / 88 units.
I can't remember who came up with the idea to swap pre-97 models to the 87 / 88 headlight motor control system but it's one of the best upgrades I've done to both of my 86 GTs. The 87 / 88 system is much quieter, quicker, and less likely to fail. Also, replacement motors for the 87 / 88 system are easy to find at Summit, Rock Auto, NAPA, O'Reilly's, etc.------------------ Mike in Sydney

The Firebird motors of same vintage will also work. However the LH becomes the right as far as mounting and vice versa. Some say the Corvette motors will also mount up and work. Same Module, etc...

Thanks for the answers- I had my (Rebuilt) 85 motors both (Individually) try to burn my garage down (Along with my 1977 Glastron Carlson CVX-20 jet)....I am going to install a relay on the main (Red) power wire in the front compartment that only energizes with Keyed power...When I am done I will have some pics and a diagram. I already picked up a 30 amp Relay.......

Have a look at the Rodney Dickman Product for this. Looks pretty good if you're keeping the old system. If memory serves, he's also showing the wiring diagraam. ------------------ Mike in Sydney
