any rear brake upgrades (Page 1/1)

I am looking for a good replacement for the rear brakes .I do have the grand am fronts and the brake booster upgrade. I want to keep the park brake ( I have used it in multiple cars because the master went out). did search but most of the links that were given were broke

I have been told that you can adapt rear grand am brakes to 84 to 87 fieros. I have not tried it, the stock rear brakes work well on my car because I can adjust the amount of braking force that goes to the rears. Stock bias puts too little power to the rear brakes, increase the force applied by the rear calipers and you get quicker stops without bigger rear brakes. Look in Ogre's Cave under Brakes. Ogre has loads of information there. If you plan on doing the rear, look at the '85 Cadillac Seville rear caliper swap. These have fittings for the parking brake but you have to install the caliper upside down. Doable - but it makes bleeding interesting. Also, you'll need to use an adapter to mount the caliper. Member DPWood used to make them. For me, I like the Gram Am front brake upgrade with the Blazer master cylinder and NEW brake booster. Can definitely lock the fronts and the bias seems pretty close to original. Remember, your results can vary and changing the brake system can be tricky, illegal, and dangerous if not done correctly.

In order to keep the original 15" lace wheels, I fitted Grand Am rotors (discs) allround.
The front brakes are Grand Am calipers and the rears are Seville calipers (with the DP Wood brackets).
The car is raced on trackdays and I must admit that the front/rear ballance is good😉.
Ogre is right in his analyse of the piston sizes! No need to modify bias.
Very doable upgrade if you have or make the brackets.

PS: Keeping stock rear brakes and uping the line pressure is not a good idea.
I cooked the stock rear discs and pads on the track.
Totally overheated - pads carbonised ! No brakes at all!

I had mine on a track day and the rears were fine. I could smell them a bit but wear was minimal and the discs show no signs of heat distortion. Shifting a bit more power to the rear is different than putting a lot of power to the rears. Some people set them up so they can lock the rears. It would be nice if there were some better pads available but I am not worried about them. Next track day I will not be braking nearly as much because I have much stickier tires now.
