My 85 GT has been sitting for a couple years and I’ve been trying to get it started recently. When I turn the key it just clicks and doesn’t event try to start. It displays a check engine light and a battery light on the instrument panel. I replaced the battery about a month and half ago but it made no difference. I just replaced the starter a couple days ago but again no change. I just tested the battery voltage and it’s already down to 11.9v. I also did a voltage drop test on the starter and it was 0.024v on the positive side and 0.004v on the negative. Also when I was under the car I didn’t hear any clicking from the starter when the key was turned but I did hear a clicking from the gas tank which I assume is the fuel pump working. Any ideas?

The Amps are not getting to the starter due to corrosion in the cables and/or at the cable connections. With the car sitting so long it's probably better to get new pos and neg battery cables and clean the connection points. [This message has been edited by Gall757 (edited 09-01-2019).]

You may want to check your headlight motors, too. Problems with them can drain the battery it it sets for a while. Also, are you sure your interior lights are off? I parked my GT in the garage once and left the interior courtesy lights on. Didn't see them on because it was daylight when I parked and the sun was coming in and illuminating the interior AND I wasn't paying attention. No one went into the garage for a while and the battery drained. Dumb mistake on my part = dead battery. ------------------ Mike in Sydney

Did you have the old starter tested? (and it WAS bad?) Did you have someone do a "load test" on the battery? The starter solenoid should click when key is turned to START. Does it?
If solenoid doesn't click you have other wiring issues going on...
If solenoid works, at that point it's the battery cables if battery tested as good.

I did just do a bench test on the starter and it works fine! But once installed there is no clicking from the solenoid. I haven't done a load test on the battery yet, but I will next chance I get. BTW the headlight motors do have their problems so I'll be sure to disconnect them for the time being.

Is "clicking" all you heard? You should be able to hear the fuel pump humming for a few seconds each time you turn the key to Start.
I suspect as Gall already suggested that it's your battery cables and/or connections. I don't think much power is being sent anywhere.

Is this a manual transmission? Check your Clutch Safety Switch...
