Sheared off the alternator pivot bolt (Page 1/2)

Guess a couple days of PB blaster wasn't enough. You know the drill...really hard to turn the bolt, then really easy! I suppose my recourse now is to just take off the whole bracket? Any way to salvage this, or just better to find a replacement bracket?

Doesn't the alternator pivot bolt have a nut on the end?

Might also help to mention the year and engine you're dealing with.

The alternator and bracket are usually removed as a unit.

86 3.4l pr with an 88 cradle.

Nope, no nut on the other side of the pivot bolt.

Alternator is typically removed by itself. At least that's how I did it before, and what I've seen people do.

It's been a long time since I've had to deal with mine (as I have Dodgerunner's excellent tensioner installed), but I thought on my bracket the bolt extended out the back of it and a nut was on there. If the indicated hole below is supposed to be threaded, then it's possible mine was stripped and then drilled out... maybe even by me years ago!

LOTS of extra work doing it that way.
Only the pivot and adjuster need to be removed.

Looks like the brackets were threaded according to this pic I had for something else... aluminum bracket with steel bolt was never a good idea tho....

Agreed. Anti-seize is handy to have when reassembling almost anything.
