Trouble Shifitng (Page 1/1)

I’m having trouble shifting into first and second gears in my 4 speed 86 GT. At times it works OK, some effort is needed but I can get the gears. Other times it is a real struggle and just won’t go into gear without multiple tries. If can get second I can get it into first, but often both are a challenge. The situation does not seem to change when the car warms up. The clutch pedal does not appear to bent, it sits above the brake pedal. The clutch engages closer to the floor but not on the floor. The throw arm on the transmission seems to have good travel to it. It is equipped with a short shifter from Rodney. I did read in the Service Manual about a shimming washer that helps to position the shifter shaft, but I don’t know how to go about checking that. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

If it shifts without much effort when the engine is off, you probably have a slave cylinder going bad. The clutch eventually will not disengage because of this. Sometimes bleeding will help but not for long. Do a search on bleeding clutches.

I'll give that a try. It does shift w/o issue when the engine is not running.
Thanks for the advice.

Adjust the cables.
If its not grinding, the slave travel is fine.
