Backup Camera (Electrical WTF issue) (Page 1/1)

Hello All,

I recently installed a backup camera to an after market radio. The camera has bright LED's built into the unit. The connections are straight forward. RCA from Camera to Monitor, Trigger wire to trigger the monitor\ Trigger wire from backup bulb , + wire and - wire for LED's. I tapped the rear backup bulb (passenger side) for both + and - wires.

Here is my WTF electrical issue, Camera was not turning on when in reverse. The car was off but ignition was on, car in reverse , camera not turning on.
The last owner hard wired a switch to manually turn on the radiator fans, which were running during my testing.. I figured I'd turn them off to conserve the battery. When I turn the fans off , the camera triggered. (WTF) If I turn on the Fans, Camera turns off. I also noticed that when the camera is on, the LED's are very dim.

Would anyone know why the Fans wires would cause this affect?

It seems your fans are pulling the current to your B.U. camera down. Does your camera work with the engine running?

Check the voltages for sure. Something is not being supplied enough power. Backup camera is a simple install like you mentioned. Without proper power it or anything will not work properly.

I'll check on both voltage and see if the camera turns on when the car is running and the fans are on when I get home later today.

Thank you for the help.....

So, the camera and the LED's appear to be working correctly. I have a feeling my battery was just low. I rebuild the headlight motors a few months back and one is sticking. I think this was causing the battery to slowly drain. So for the time being looks like the issue fixed.

Thank you all for the help.
