TEMP. ? (Page 1/2)

Yes or no please. Is 220* too hot for an '87 GT on the interstate with outside temp. around 80*?
Thanks,

Everything stock? How fast you going? You have full coolant?

Temperature gauge has been calibrated?

no

Gall: Thank you, just wanted to hear. Stock 2.8/65-70 mph./over past two summers, new coolant system everything.

If GM did not want you to operate the car at 220*, they would have put in a different fan switch. Admittedly, nothing is very accurate, but they built big safety margins into everything.

Maybe his coolant temperature is actually 250°F.

Look into it regardless. Peace of mind and all.

Fiero and most other engines are happy and safe running at 200 to 230°F coolant temp but most push BS often to sell you things you don't need.
Proper Cooling fill and working cooling system the car won't boil over until ~ 265°F.
Big Problem is many have system problems that restrict coolant flow and often air flow but just blame "stupid GM" etc that have Real Engineers and spend a fortune for even car made way before you even see first car sold. Most owners don't ever try to fix problems before adding crap to a car.

Numbers on Fiero dash temp gauge is bogus at best and means little because most are way off for several reasons. Even If you "Calibrate" them one day then next day can be off again because never made to be accurate and just one crap connection anywhere in the car can make this even more so.
Most other cars gauge only says cold and hot w/ maybe a red zone.

So When dash says x is just a guess to a warning but can't trust it even when system is boiling over. Crap rad crap and other issues can made boil over very easy. Weak/dead cap then system can boil at or just over 212°F w/ weak/no coolant. Most boil protection is the Rad Cap and Not the Coolant product you add to it.

Want real temp then get ECM scan tool or use other more reliable thermometers.
Newer cars can be same as Fiero or dash temp reads same sensor as ECM/PCM and BCM with better sensor and less problems. You need a scan tool etc to actually work on them even w/o having MIL being On or stored DTC in memory.
