Is the Fiero jack proprietary? (Page 1/1) |

My Fiero is missing the jack. Do I need to replace it with one from a Fiero, or will any old jack mount there in its place and work just fine for the car?
Same question for the spare tire as well. Thanks!------------------ '85 GT 3.4 L

A few jacks can be made to work with the Fiero but the jack that comes with the car has the groove in the top where the lifting lip goes. This prevents slippage. If you have a flat top screw jack with the groove it should work. As for lift points for a floor jack, I use the end of the integral frame rails near the front and in the rear the front end of the engine cradle and stay away from the coolant tubes at all cost. ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. It's not a Fiero specific part. Many GM cars from the same time period had the same jack. Same goes for the spare tire. A good place to look is GM FWD cars with the 5x100mm bolt pattern.

I don't bother taking it's own jack out to raise one side. I have an old clicker jack with that indent in it for the raising point. Most junk yards have a pile of jacks you can choose from for about 10 bucks. I like the clicker better than the screw jack...

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone have a photo of the GM jack with the indentation that they can post?

A quick google search turned up this. It looks almost identical to the factory Fiero jack.

That said, I don't trust those jacks as far as I can throw them. One of them collapsed while I was working on a car. Luckily, I wasn't under the car (was changing a tire).[This message has been edited by Blacktree (edited 08-16-2019).]

I have never tried to mount it in the stock location, but I always carry a stock jack from a 97 Silverado 4x4 when I travel. It is bigger, stronger, lifts higher, and just seems to work better.

I wanted a jack that would lift my 88 GT at the at the jacking points to just have in my garage, so I wouldn't have to yank the factory one from under the hood all the time. I also wanted one that had a hex drive so I could use a ratchet or an impact wrench and move it up or down faster. The jack for a Saturn S series (GM # 21011868) works well. It's the same basic design as the Fiero jack (in the photo. Saturn jack upper, Fiero jack lower).

The Saturn jack DOES NOT fit in the Fiero's underhood location, at least not without some modifications to car or jack. But it's a good answer for what I wanted it for, especially since I got it for $3 from a local yard.[This message has been edited by OldGuyinaGT (edited 08-18-2019).]
