Are the connectors there on cars without the options that used them? (Page 1/2) |

When I recently replaced a rug on my 85GT that has A/C ,power windows, tilt wheel but not more options, I noticed several connectors under the dash that were not connected to anything. Everything works so I assume that they were put there for perhaps the electric door locks and the power mirror. Does anyone know what these are used for and can they be used if I add the options? ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. Yes...the wire harness did not change during one model year, so all '85 harnesses are the same and covered all the options for that year. [This message has been edited by Gall757 (edited 08-13-2019).]

Thanks. Now only to figure out which connector went where and how to energize and use them. Assume that the one closest to the doors are for the power locks and power mirrors but I'll guess that the one on the console side was used to get the power to the console switch. I'll have to look in the Helms manual to see if there is specific info.

Ditch the inadequate Helms Manual and get a Factory Service Manual. The electrical section is very good.

On my 1985 SE V6, I have absolutely nothing for the AC system, but I do have a wire and plug for the PWR window system under the dash coming from the fuse box. So some stuff is there, but some stuff may be missing.
As for the Haynes manual, it became very bad 10-15 years ago, but my early one (from the 80s) has much more info/wiring diagrams/etc....But no matter what, they don't fully cover the 88 suspension/brakes well......I have a Haynes and the '85 Factory manual- bought it off of Amazon @ $56. (I also have an '88 factory manual for my brakes/rear suspension which I converted to 88)[This message has been edited by cvxjet (edited 08-13-2019).]

Very few connectors w/ nothing going into but some are "Normal." You need to post more info/pics to tell you more.
But note that Door options are 300 zone and GM made several different 300 zone harness to plug into 200 zone and rest of car. Example 300 zone for PW doors does not = PW + PL or P mirrors See my Cave, Wire Reading
Never trust Haynes Chilton and others for electrics. Use FSM or AllDataDIY. Alldata gets all info from GM for a given year of car. 85 get 85 data not 84 86 87 or 88 unless 85 has same data for some others. ------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. The Helm IS the FSM.
You may be thinking of Haynes.

I did not know that Helms was the publisher of the GM manuals, I was thinking of Haynes.
Thanks for setting me straight, I learned something today.

I thought that the factory manuals were published by Helms but when I looked at it GM was the publisher. The manual we have here is about 2 1/2" thick and it says Pontiac Fiero Service Manual so it looks like we have the right one. Upon further checking, Helms is the publisher for factory service manuals.[This message has been edited by Dennis LaGrua (edited 08-13-2019).]

I distinctly remember when converting my first '88 Formula (in 1996) to power windows the harness was already there in the doors and under the shift plate.
